Our story...

In 1981, Johanne Poirier-Ledoux realized a dream by directing her first youth choir. Over time
her youngsters would grow and become self-assured, as they evolved in an environment of joy, friendship
and sharing. They would learn discipline and once introduced to rhythm and different musical genres,
music would become an instrument in the development of their social consciousness.   Indeed, her young
singers would learn to express love, peace, justice, cooperation, joie de vivre of which their smiling faces
would be their testimony. As well, since 1999, with her friend and collaborator, Étienne Chagnon – a well
reputed musician and musical director in his own right – elaborate shows were created that would prove to
be just as enriching for her young singers as unforgettable for their audiences.

Inspired by such valuable experiences, Mme Jojo started the Musicanto choir in 2012, a group of children
from 8 to 16 years old. The choir’s repertoire is multilingual and consists of popular pieces,  notably from
French and Quebec singer-songwriters, as well as excerpts from musicals and songs from such genres
as country, rock & roll, rhythm & blues and gospel. Musicanto remains true to Mme Jojo’s vision in all
respects. Thus, it is under her guidance and able direction, firm yet tender, sensitive and passionate, that
youngsters are joyfully fulfilled.

In the past, Mme Jojo’s choristers have sung on television and recorded many CD’s. As well, they have
performed all around the Montreal area and beyond, including in Québec City and Ottawa where, in the
latter case, they had the distinct honour of singing at Rideau Hall and in the Rotunda on Parliament Hill.
It is her intention to provide her Musicanto group with equally enriching adventures.
